The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is recommending children as young as 6 months receive the measles vaccine.
The change comes after seven measles cases were identified in Washtenaw County and another case in Monroe County, according to an April 2 department news release. Given the possibility of community transmission, the department is recommending infants 6 to 11 months OLD receive an accelerated first dose of measles vaccine. The accelerated dose would require two additional doses after 12 months of age to complete the series.
The change is in effect until May 16.
The CDC recommends the MMR vaccine for children 12 to 15 months of age, with a second dose given 28 days after the first.
