Kenya confirmed its first case of Ebola. The man, who had arrived from the Democratic Republic of Congo, died of the infection Oct. 5, The New York Times reported Oct. 6.
Here is what to know.
1. The man, a Kenyan citizen who lived in Congo for seven years, became ill a month ago and was treated at a Congo hospital, Kenyan health officials said. The man traveled to Uganda before taking a flight to Kenya’s capital. He was treated in an isolation unit at a private hospital.
2. Authorities have identified 28 contacts, including family members and health workers, and are tracing 23 passengers who were on the same flight from Uganda. They said a single case can quickly be contained as long as the right measures are followed.
3. As of Oct. 3, Congo’s outbreak has recorded 8,544 confirmed cases, 4,114 deaths and currently has 824 patients in isolation.
