HHS Tries to Court GOP Governors to Expand Medicaid

At the National Governors Association Winter Meeting in Washington, D.C., HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and others from her department met with individual governors who had not yet agreed to expand Medicaid in their states in an effort to woo them to accept the federal money available for those expansions, according to a report by NPR.

So far, eight of 30 Republican governors have broken with party tradition and announced they would broaden eligibility requirements to more low-income residents in their state in exchange for full federal funding for the additional cost for three years. A few, including Idaho Gov. C. L. “Butch” Otter, have not yet taken a stance on the issue.
