The CDC will use $900 million to launch a three-year initiative with states to improve education about opioids, prevention efforts and response activities. Part of this effort includes improving overdose data tracking.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration will award the remaining $932 million to states through its State Opioid Response Grants. This program has received $500 million this year to support medication-assisted treatment programs, and the new funding will continue to expand these programs.
