Here are five alternative GOP healthcare reforms that may develop, according to the report.
- Allowing people to buy health insurance across state lines.
- Allowing small businesses to pool together to purchase insurance. Republicans say this will give small businesses leverage to get lower group insurance rates.
- Supporting tort reform. Many Republicans believe in limiting medical malpractice court awards for non-economic damages such as pain and suffering, and some embrace ideas to convene specialized health courts or create safe harbors for physicians following guidelines.
- Block-granting Medicaid. Republicans argue the federal government should write states a check and lift some of CMS’ current Medicaid requirements.
- Offering insurance subsidies to individuals. The subsidies would likely come in the form of tax credits or deductibles. The idea is to encourage, rather than mandate, the purchasing of health insurance.
