Florida Public Health System to Lose $56M

Miami’s public health system expects to lose $56 million this year and $168 million next year as a result of caring for an increasing number of uninsured patients and decreasing tax revenue, according to a report in the Miami Herald.

The number of uninsured patients being seen by Jackson Health System has increased 27 percent this year. At the same time, sales and property tax revenue used to fund the health system is expected to decrease by $42 million.

The health system has said it may cut services, including some primary care services, and labor costs.

The system has applied for funds totaling $255 million from various stimulus programs, which have yet to be approved.
