Dr. Mandel and four other physicians were selected for excellence in medicine awards based on their leadership, community service and dedication to treating underserved patients, according to the release. The awards were presented Feb. 11 at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
In addition to practicing anesthesia for more than 20 years, Dr. Mandel created the Great Barrington, Mass.-based Volunteers in Medicine Berkshires, a free healthcare clinic for uninsured or underinsured residents. He recruited 55 volunteer physicians and clinical specialists to assist with the program’s mission, and nearly 2,000 patients have received treatment to date.
Dr. Mandel is the former chairman of the department of anesthesia at Providence Hospital in Holyoke, Mass.
The AMA Foundation also gave out the Dr. Nathan Davis International Award in Medicine to Mark Jacobson, MD, Rebecca Morsch, MD, and VK Raju, MD. Mary Brennan Wirshup, MD, received the Pride in Profession Award.
