Prominent antibiotic resistance researcher Dr. Stuart Levy dies at 80 

Stuart Levy, MD, a researcher known for his pioneering work in antibiotic resistance, died Sept. 4, reports The Scientist.

Dr. Levy, 80, earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and joined Medford, Mass.-based Tufts University as a professor in 1971. He spent 47 years conducting research on bacteria and antibiotic resistance at Tufts, also serving as director of the Center for Adaptation Genetics and Drug Resistance at Tufts University School of Medicine.

In 1976, Dr. Levy and colleagues published a groundbreaking study showing that antibiotic use in animals could have adverse effects on humans.

Dr. Levy also served as a past president of the American Society for Microbiology and helped found Paratek Pharmaceuticals.
