Patient safety tool: SAGES’ electrosurgical instrument safety training program

The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons offers the Fundamental Use of Surgical Energy program, a free program designed to educate surgeons and OR staff about the safe use of surgical energy-based devices.

The FUSE program includes an interactive web-based curriculum covering topics like the following:

  • Fundamental principles of electrosurgical devices
  • Practice aspects of commonly used energy devices
  • Integration of energy systems with other devices
  • Prevention of OR fires

The FUSE program is appropriate for surgeons, surgical nurses and other personnel who work in the OR and other procedural areas, according to SAGES.
