Patient Safety Tool: Appropriate Use of Medical Resources Discussion Guide

The American Hospital Association offers resources to help healthcare workers discuss the appropriate use of medical resources and reduce non-beneficial care.

The AHA identified five hospital-based procedures or interventions that patients and physicians should review and discuss before beginning the procedure: appropriate blood management in inpatient service, appropriate antimicrobial stewardship, reducing inpatient admissions for ambulatory-sensitive conditions, appropriate use of elective percutaneous coronary intervention and appropriate use of the intensive care unit for imminently terminal illness.

To help facilitate discussions regarding the appropriate use of medical resources, the AHA developed a discussion guide that raises questions for hospitals to address when implementing the proposed recommendations.
