Massachusetts’ Open ED Policy Hasn’t Affected Waiting Times

A state analysis found that Massachusetts’ new policy requiring EDs to accept all patients delivered by ambulance has not increased waiting times, according to a report by the Boston Globe.

Patients who were admitted to 75 hospitals across the state spent 5-5.5 hours in the ED and patients who were sent home spent about 2,5 hours there.

Before the new law took effect, Massachusetts hospitals frequently turned away ambulances when their EDs were overcrowded.
