Under the new rules, hospitals are required to tell the state about all significant errors, including surgeries on the wrong people and surgeries on the wrong site and are required to publicize this information, according to the report.

Hospitals will also be prohibited from charging patients for any care that is required as the result of an error. The new rules further state that hospitals must form Patient and Family Advisory Councils by Oct. 2010.
