Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C., has been verified as a Level 1 trauma center by the American College of Surgeons.

Three notes:

1. The hospital is now the only ACS-verified Level 1 trauma center in Western North Carolina, and one of seven in the state.

2. The verification followed a comprehensive site survey in September and is valid for three years.

3. Mission Hospital — part of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare — launched its trauma program in 1995 as a Level 2 center.
