Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, Texas, will open the region’s first pediatric intensive care unit Dec. 8, bringing advanced care for critically ill children to East Texas for the first time.
The unit will be staffed by nurses, advanced practice providers and physicians trained in treating serious pediatric illnesses, according to a Dec. 1 news release from Irving, Texas-based Christus Health, which operates Mother Frances Hospital.
Leaders said the unit will reduce the need to transfer children with severe conditions to hospitals in Dallas.
To prepare for the unit’s opening, nearly a dozen pediatric nurses at the hospital spent six weeks enhancing their training with staff at Christus Children’s in San Antonio.
