Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai has established the Center for Autonomous Robotic Surgery to develop robotic systems that work alongside surgeons in the operating room.

Andrew Hung, MD, a urologist and minimally invasive robotic surgery specialist, and Michael Yip, PhD, will serve as co-directors of the new center, according to an Oct. 12 news release from Cedars-Sinai.

Dr. Yip joins Cedars-Sinai from the University of California San Diego, where he directed the Advanced Robotics and Controls Laboratory.

The autonomous systems will be designed to “augment a surgeon’s clinical judgment rather than replace it,” according to the release, with the aim of treating more complex diseases, reaching more patients and making surgery safer.

“Surgical robotics has reached a turning point,” Dr. Yip said. “We now have the tools, from machine learning to advanced sensing, to build systems that genuinely understand the surgical environment and be able to autonomously support the surgical team in real time.”
