A suspect was injured the evening of March 5 after exchanging gunfire with a security officer outside Henry Ford St. John Hospital in Detroit, police said.
The health system said in a statement shared with Becker’s the incident occurred when an individual opened fire on an officer who was investigating reports of suspicious activity in the hospital’s parking lot.
“Our officer fired back, hitting one of the suspects, who’s being treated at our hospital,” Henry Ford Health said, adding that any questions about additional suspects or the investigation should be directed to authorities.
“The safety and well-being of our team members, patients and community is our top priority, and we are grateful our officer was unharmed,” the health system said.
According to a news release from the Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety Department shared with Becker’s, officers responded to the hospital’s north parking lot at approximately 11:53 p.m. March 5 for a report of shots fired.
Officers found evidence confirming a shooting involving hospital security personnel, and one person sustained gunshot wounds and is receiving medical treatment, the department said.
Authorities said the incident is considered resolved and there is no threat to the public. The investigation remains active and is being conducted by the Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety Department with assistance from Michigan State Police.
Henry Ford Health said the hospital remains open and operating normally.
