There are some typical approaches hospitals and health systems tend to take to prevent healthcare-associated infections, like following proper hand hygiene and environmental cleaning. But one health system in Jacksonville, Fla., took their efforts a little bit further.

Hand hygiene compliance at one hospital doubled after flashing red lights were placed on hand sanitizer dispensers, according to a study published in the American Journal of Infection Control.

Multi-dose vials boast advantages of reduced costs and less unused medication waste. But regulatory guidelines geared toward infection control can hinder providers from achieving such benefits.
