This year, 10 nurses at Los Angeles-based Keck Medicine of USC received $10,000 each in recognition of their nursing excellence.

The Simms/Mann Family Foundation’s Off the Chart: Rewarding Nursing Greatness program recognizes nurses for their leadership, ingenuity and expertise in caring for patients. Award recipients “embody a bias toward action, a capacity for self-direction, originality and creative instincts, courageous and bold thinking, and the potential to achieve even more,” according to a release shared with Becker’s.

“This recognition is a wonderful way to reward greatness among our nurses throughout the health system,” Annette Sy, DNP, RN, chief nursing executive for Keck Medical Center of USC, told Becker’s. “We hope this gift helps inspire more of our nurses to assist in their communities, perform volunteer work and attend educational sessions to continue providing exceptional patient care to our patients and beyond.”

Dr. Sy said the system and nurse leadership try to provide nurses with opportunities to showcase their skills and greatness. This ranges from helping with projects within patient care — such as streamlining workflows in the electronic health record — as well as providing opportunities for volunteer work, including working in food banks, shelters for people experiencing homelessness, and assisting at the Los Angeles Marathon.
