The proposal, a part of Mr. Cuomo’s 2020 State of the State agenda, would eliminate lifetime licenses issued to physicians and replace them with a regular renewal process.
“The first responsibility of any medical professional is do no harm and when someone violates that oath they must be held appropriately accountable,” Mr. Cuomo said in a statement cited by The Leader.
The governor’s plan would let the state health commissioner confirm investigations about medical workers, which is currently illegal. Based on a public-risk assessment, the health commissioner could also suspend a physician’s license at the start of an investigation.
The legislation would also make new details about physicians’ practices public.
