NC's Gaston Memorial Hospital in Danger of Losing Medicare Status

Gaston Memorial Hospital, a CaroMont Health facility in Gastonia, N.C., is in danger of losing its Medicare status after state regulators cited the hospital for patient safety deficiencies.

On Jan. 19, CMS conducted a survey of Gaston Memorial Hospital that resulted in an "immediate jeopardy" finding. GMH was cited for deficiencies related to the Medicare conditions of participation. The deficiencies resulted from an incident that occurred in November, involving the failure of nursing staff to follow medication verification policies and procedures. The incident was immediately identified, and a corrective action plan was initiated at that time.

In order to have the "immediate jeopardy" status lifted, the hospital is required to submit a corrective action plan to CMS no later than Feb. 3. CMS will evaluate the plan and conduct a full validation survey of GMH's compliance with Medicare's conditions of participation.

According to the hospital news release, CaroMont officials are confident that Gaston Memorial's funding will remain in place.
