National Park Service looks to expand infectious disease surveillance

The National Park Service is asking organizational employees, concessionaire staff and park visitors to comment on the agency's collection of information on health trends pertaining to infectious illnesses among staff and park visitors.

With more than 400 national park sites attracting hundreds of millions of visitors per year, there is a significant potential for the dissemination of pathogens through the NPS system. Currently, the NPS collects and stores data on health trends among employees and visitors at Yellowstone National Park. The NPS is currently looking to expand this program to other sites.

Prior to conducting this expansion, the NPS is looking to collect feedback from employees and visitors on the necessity of the health information collection program, the burden of collecting this information, the quality and utility of the information collected, and how to improve the data collection process.

The NPS will accept comments through Feb. 13, 2017.
