Regions Hospital’s infection rate was recently published on HHS’ Hospital Compare website.
Regions Hospital has been making a focused effort to eliminate CLABSIs since 2005. At the time, a multidisciplinary team was charged with implementing a CLABSI prevention “bundle,” tracking compliance with its elements and measuring its results. The CLABSI bundle includes hand hygiene, site preparation, selecting the best site for inserting the line and removing the line as soon as the patient no longer needs it.
Regions Hospital was able to eliminate CLABSIs in the surgical ICU from August 2010-October 2011. Since October 2011, Regions Hospital has had only two infections, giving the hospital an overall CLABSI rate of 0.59 per 1,000 central line days for 2011, which is still below the national benchmark of 1.0.
