MDR Organisms Increase VAP Mortality 6-Fold

Ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by multidrug-resistant organisms was associated with a mortality rate six times higher than cases of VAP caused by non-MDR organisms, according to research published in the American Journal of Infection Control.

Researchers studied a 107-member patient population, 49 of whom contracted VAP.

Factors associated with MDR VAP were home antibiotics, pre-ventilator-associated pneumonia hospital stay and exposure to healthcare, according to the article.
