After repeated citations for lapses in patient care, Massachusetts decided Westwood (Mass.) Lodge, a psychiatric hospital owned by Arbour Health System in Pembroke, Mass., can once again begin admitting adult patients Tuesday under increased oversight, according to the Boston Globe.

State regulators closed all admissions to Westwood Lodge May 12 after discovering serious mistakes, including a case of a 9-year-old boy who received the wrong medication for nine days.

Since closing, the hospital has filled leadership positions, appointed a director of operations and hired additional staff. Additionally, during the cease of admissions, Westwood Lodge renovated patient units, advanced programming and improved treatment planning.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration decided the hospital could reopen after state regulators confirmed it had fulfilled requirements to reopen adult admissions. An external monitor for the state will remain at the hospital for six months to ensure patients are receiving proper care.

Westwood Lodge will permanently close its children’s unit. Adolescent unit admissions remains closed until further notice, according to the report.
