The multi-year initiative includes 20 hospitals from seven health systems across the state, and aims to improve hospitals’ processes, systems and structures, ultimately leading to consistently safe and high-quality care. The South Carolina Safe Care Commitment will focus on moving toward high reliability in healthcare, “defined as consistent performance at high levels of safety over long periods of time,” according to the release.

Under the initiative, CEOs and other leaders from the hospitals will meet regularly to develop strategies to create high reliability, according to the release. Hospitals will also use a web-based electronic application created by the Center for Transforming Healthcare to identify and assess performance in clinical practices that lead to high reliability, according to the release.

Hospitals will measure success through safety culture survey assessments, patient harm results and cost savings. The Center for Transforming Healthcare and the SCHA also plan to share lessons learned with healthcare organizations across the state.
