Investigation at Parkview Community Hospital finds 2 problems, but not with maggots

The California Department of Health investigated Riverside-based Parkview Community Hospital and found two issues for the hospital to address, but did not find the hospital in violation regarding maggots allegedly found in cafeteria food and on a patient, according to a report from The Press Enterprise.

The investigation was triggered by a complaint filed by the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West in June. The union — which is in a labor dispute with the hospital — alleged that there were maggots found in a patient's mouth and nose in February and maggots in hospital soup in April, among other issues.

The state investigation found fire doors that did not close completely and also found the hospital did not properly report a power outage that affected patient care. The hospital has submitted a plan to rectify these issues, according to the report.

However, in regards to the maggots, the hospital was not found in violation.

"Although our investigation determined that maggots were observed on the patient, there was no evidence that exposure to insects occurred at the facility," a department of health spokesman told The Press Enterprise.

SEIU-UHW also filed another compliant related to maggots at the hospital on Oct. 5, and the state is investigating that complaint, according to the report.

A call made to Parkview Community Hospital regarding the issues was not immediately returned.
