Which Practice Setting Do Physicians Find Most Appealing?

The majority of physicians in training prefer hospital employment, whereas practicing physicians’ first preference is a single-specialty group, according to survey findings from The Medicus Firm.

As part of The Medicus Firm’s 2013 “Physician Practice Preference & Relocation Survey,” physicians identified the type of practice setting that most appealed to them. Figures reflect responses from a pool of 2,568 physicians representing 19 specialties.

Physicians in training
1. Hospital employment — 28.1 percent
2. University employment or academic medicine — 25.9 percent
3. Single-specialty or group partnership — 24.1 percent
4. Multispecialty or group partnership — 17.1 percent
5. Solo practice — 2.6 percent
6. Military or government-employed practice — 0.9 percent
7. Concierge practice — 0.9 percent
8. Nonclinical job or corporate role — 0.4 percent

Practicing physicians
1. Single-specialty group or group partnership — 28.4 percent
2. Hospital employment — 22 percent
3. Multispecialty or group partnership — 18 percent
4. University employment or academic medicine — 12.5 percent
5. Solo practice — 9.1 percent
6. Nonclinical job or corporate role — 3.8 percent
7. Military or government-employed practice — 3.4 percent
8. Concierge practice — 2.9 percent
