Small but mighty ways to support staff

Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic Health System has used a few small but mighty ways to support its physician staff.

The system created a network through their Physician and Allied Professionals Health Committee that provides support to physicians in all parts of their professional journey, according to an April 22 report published by the AMA. Here are the three most impactful ways they have support staff:

1. Peer-to-peer support network: Providing a confidential peer-to-peer support network has helped physicians navigate care with adverse medical outcomes, workplace conflicts, professional challenges, and find a safe space to discuss work.

2. Mentorships and coaching: The system has organized a mentorship program with newer faculty and physicians through its division of education. The two-year initiative pairs early-career physicians with experienced mentors who meet regularly to guide them through clinical and administrative processes. The program also has coaches to help improve efficiency and patient-experience ratings for physicians.
3. Culture of support: One of the committee’s primary goals has been to create a culture of support that focuses on the health and wellness of employees while connecting them to higher leadership to effect change throughout the organization.
