The pilot functions like an accountable care organization, with physicians, nurses, hospitals and other providers collaborating to share responsibility over patients, reduce healthcare costs and improve quality. So far, the pilot has active contracts with 310 primary care physicians and more than 700 specialists in nearly 40 specialties.
Saint Thomas formed MissionPoint in August 2011. It covers more than 15,000 patients and hopes to cover 35,000 members by January 2013.
