More Ohio physicians are choosing the route of hospital employment, according to the report. Dayton VA Medical Center, Wright State University in Dayton and Wright-Patterson Medical Center, part of the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, employ nearly 1,000 physicians combined.

Hospitals may employ physicians to increase referral numbers or position themselves to work as accountable care organizations. Health systems that hire physicians can also use a bundled payment system, in which Medicare makes a single reimbursement for all hospital and physician care.
