OB-GYN group walks away from federal funding

The American College of Obstetricians has stopped accepting federal government funding, which supports its programs and contracts, the medical society confirmed to Becker’s on Aug. 1.

“Recent changes in federal funding laws and regulations significantly impact ACOG’s program goals, policy positions and ability to provide timely and evidence-based guidance and recommendations for care,” the ACOG said in a statement. “We remain fully committed to this critical work and will allocate our own resources to continue it in a way that is centered on patient needs and grounded in evidence. As we develop the details of this path forward, we will share more information with our valued members and partners.”

The group, which represents more than 60,000 OB-GYNs and medical students, said it will continue to work with the government on advocacy and provide comments with respect to rulemaking, adding, “we will evaluate opportunities to partner with the government in the future where our program goals align.”

In 2024 and 2025, the ACOG Foundation — the organization’s charity arm — received more than $2 million in grants from HHS.

The move comes amid the Trump administration’s broader efforts to roll back federal diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. In January, President Donald Trump signed an executive order instructing agencies to terminate DEI-related offices, programs and grants deemed misaligned with the administration’s stated priorities. DEI efforts have historically been a focus of ACOG’s work to reduce maternal mortality and address racial and geographic health disparities.

“We remain committed to reducing preventable maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity within the United States, to ensuring the quality and safety of patient care that will improve population health outcomes, to increasing access to preventive care, and more,” the ACOG said. “We look forward to building on our successful work to date by shaping future programs that advance health for all.”
