Albuquerque-based University of New Mexico is planning a $600 million expansion of its medical school, the Albuquerque Journal reported July 28.

Here’s what to know:

1. The expansion will add a new on-campus facility, hundreds of hospital beds and staff positions, and nearly double the number of students in the next 10 years.

2. The University of New Mexico School of Medicine is the state’s largest medical school.

3. The school is constructing a new building to replace the main facility, Reginald Heber Fitz Hall, which was built in 1967. The new building is expected to be completed in 2030.

4. The state legislature set aside $30 million for the new school, with the rest of the funding coming from state support, philanthropy and UNM capital funding.

5. The number of students in health provider programs, medical students and residents is expected to rise from 1,108 in fiscal 2026 to 2,191 by 2035.

6. In the next decade, the UNM Hospital will also expand to 265 inpatient hospital beds and offer 200 residency and fellowship spots.
