Despite the closure, training will continue for residents in obstetrics and medical students from the University of Washington in Seattle, including programs for nurses, podiatrists, physician assistants, pharmacy physicians, medical students from other schools and other healthcare professionals, according to the report.

The closure of the 26-year-old program is based on a Bureau of Medicine and Surgery hospital study showing advances in clinical medicine led to more outpatient services, the Bremerton Patriot reported. In October 2014, the hospital converted its emergency department to an urgent care center, closing its intensive care unit and decreasing the number of patients and complex cases.
