Southcoast Health System, a hospital system in Southeastern Massachusetts, has signed an affiliation agreement with physicians from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston — instead of one of Boston’s hospitals — to provide guidance on cancer treatments, according to a report in the Boston Globe.

Under the terms of the partnership, Southcoast will pay the Texas physicians an undisclosed amount for their expertise, including advice on drugs, pain control and chemotherapy safety.

The out-of-state partnership could help Southcoast respond to increasing competition for oncology patients in the market, according to the report.
