The Tri-County Medicaid Collaborative will include five competing health plans in the Portland-area, and was formed to compete with two larger health insurers also looking to tap into Oregon’s new Medicaid managed care program: UnitedHealth of Minneapolis and ODS Health Plan of Portland.
In 2011 the Oregon legislature passed a bill to have coordinated care organizations of physicians, nurses and healthcare providers take care of its Medicaid patients, a plan that could save the state more than $3 billion in the next five years.
Tri-County filed its paperwork with the Oregon Health Authority on Monday and hopes to begin providing care as a CCO for an estimated 200,000 patients who qualify beginning Aug. 1.
