Iowa Health System, Wellmark Partner to Create Iowa’s First Commercial ACO

Iowa Health System, based in Des Moines, Iowa, and Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa announced an agreement today to bring accountable care organization to four major markets in Iowa. This is the first commercial ACO in that state.

Iowa Health already operates a CMS Pioneer ACO Model out of Fort Dodge, Iowa. That market, along with Des Moines, Waterloo and Cedar Rapids will now have a commercial ACO model in place, due to the partnership with Wellmark, the state’s largest health insurer.

The following Iowa Health System hospitals, their affiliated medical clinics and home health services will participate in the new commercial ACO:

  • St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
  • Iowa Health-Des Moines, including Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Iowa Lutheran Hospital, and Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines.
  • Methodist West Hospital in West Des Moines.
  • Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.
  • Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
