The program will nearly double the amount of residencies in mid-Georgia, Mercer President Bill Underwood told The Telegraph. Macon-based Navicent Health has 130 resident spots.

The program hopes to increase Georgia’s physician retention, as only 52 percent of residents return to the state after completing out-of-state residencies, Mr. Underwood told The Telegraph. In comparison, 90 percent of Mercer graduates stay in Georgia after completing in-state residencies.

Fourteen residents will begin the program in July 2017.
