Clinicians protest Jefferson Health’s proposal to buy Hahnemann’s residency program

A healthcare union rallied Aug. 28 to try to stop Philadelphia-based Jefferson Health from buying the residency program from the closing Hahnemann University Hospital, CBS Philly reports.

Jefferson Health won a bid earlier this month to buy the residency program for $50 million. The Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals, which has represented 800 Hahnemann nurses, protested the bid at Jefferson University Hospital in Center City, Philadelphia.

PASNAP says Jefferson Health’s bid for the residency program crowded out two other potential buyers, according to CBS Philly. An Aug. 10 press release from PASNAP said other buyers would have kept the hospital open in addition to maintaining the residency program. PASNAP political organizer Samir Sonti told CBS Philly: “There’s a lot of money to be made from stripping Hahnemann of one of its most valuable assets — the residency program — as well as closing down a competitor right down the street.”

Jefferson Health told CBS Philly: “[We are] proud of our efforts to keep resident physicians in Philadelphia so we can serve the underserved and provide for the future physician workforce needs of our region.”
