The decision as to which system can build a hospital — or whether both can — is up to the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, which is expected to vote on the matter in May.
The two systems would bring different physician models to McHenry County. Mercy Health System, with facilities in Janesville, Wis., and Harvard, Ill., employs 375 of its 415 physicians. Centegra, which operates hospitals in McHenry and Woodstock, Ill., has 352 physicians with privileges and 68 employed physicians.
Mercy administrators say employment helps the system achieve integration and alignment with physicians, while Centegra believes alignment can be achieved without employment. According to the report, Centegra believes a combination of employment and privileges allows more diversity and adaptability.
