Healthcare costs for 1 million CareFirst patients in the PCMH program were $98 million less than the insurer projected for 2012, representing a savings of 2.7 percent, according to the news release.
Additionally, about 66 percent of participating primary care panels, groups of physicians that join together to participate in the program, received increased reimbursement in 2012 based on performance in certain quality measures as well as achieved savings.
“These results are encouraging. The PCMH program was designed with the goal of bending the healthcare cost trend, and our second year results suggest the program is having just such an impact,” Chet Burrell, CareFirst president and CEO, said in the release.
CareFirst’s PCMH program has nearly 3,600 participating primary care providers, and the program now covers more than 1 million CareFirst members.
