Capital Blue Cross Celebrates One Year With Accountable Care Arrangement; Partners ‘Satisfied’

One year after Harrisburg, Pa.-based Capital Blue Cross started an accountable care arrangement with providers, the health insurer says the new care model is working, and primary care physicians involved in the program are satisfied.

Under the arrangement, Capital Blue Cross partners with primary care physician practices to provide nursing resources and technology in order to offer more patient-centered care. The model uses a population management tool to identify Blue Cross members at risk for a medical condition. A care coordinator then works with caregivers to ensure patients have timely physician appointments, receive proper testing and maintain an appropriate nutritional and exercise regimen. The coordinator also works on educating patients about their medical bills and insurance benefits.

By focusing on preventive, holistic care, Capital Blue Cross plans to lower medical costs. In turn, physician groups participating are incentivized to provide higher quality care through new payment methods.

Capital Blue Cross says practices participating in the accountable care model have all reported they are either “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with the arrangement.
