Mr. Corcoran advised hospitals to slow down their development and wait for a clearer picture of how ACOs will function. He said the California Medical Association is currently developing a set of criteria to ensure patients receive real benefits from ACOs and medical foundations.
He voiced concern that many hastily developed medical foundations are being developed for the benefit of the hospitals’ bottom line. He said by the time policymakers get around to interpreting the ACO section of the healthcare reform law, the healthcare marketplace may have changed to a highly consolidated market, with decisions being made far from local communities.
