7 Recent Transactions Between Hospitals and Physician Groups

Here are seven transactions that occurred in the past month between hospitals and physician groups, beginning with the most recent.

1. Milwaukee-based Aurora Health Care has acquired Zion (Ill.) Clinic, and Aurora now has 16 Illinois-owned physicians within its system.

2. Grand River Cardiology, a practice in Grand Rapids, Mich., has joined Saint Mary’s Health Care, also based in Grand Rapids.

3. Spokane, Wash.-based Providence Health Care has acquired Spokane Cardiology in its effort to develop a new heart institute. Through this acquisition, three of Spokane’s four independent cardiology clinics are now owned by hospital groups.

4. Winchester, Va.-based Valley Health System has acquired Ridgewood, Va.-based Valley Heart Group. System officials say the acquisition of the five-member practice will enhance Valley Health’s ability to provide the best possible cardiac care.

5. Beverly, Mass.-based Northeast Health System will affiliate with Burlington, Mass.-based Lahey Clinic Medical Center. Under the new structure, a parent organization named the Lahey Health System will be created by NHS and Lahey Clinic Foundation and will govern both organizations.

6. Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., has launched Westchester Heart and Vascular, a large multispecialty cardiovascular practice with seven locations. So far, the hospital has recruited 10 new physicians for the practice, which includes 33 physicians. The hospital has plans to add another five.

7. St. John Providence Health System in Warren, Mich., has entered into a 50-50 joint venture with a group of 21 neurologists and one endovascular neurosurgeon to co-manage non-surgical neurological services at the system’s five acute-care hospitals.
