If approved in 2022, the expansion would make South Dakota the 39th state to expand Medicaid, covering about 42,500 state residents, according to a Nov. 8 news release from South Dakotans Decide Healthcare shared with Becker’s.

The move makes South Dakota the seventh state to look toward a ballot measure in order to expand Medicaid coverage.
