Only 44% of Americans Say Health Coverage is Government’s Responsibility

Public support for a government guarantee of healthcare coverage is at an all-time low with only 44 percent of individuals reporting that they believe it is the government’s responsibility to ensure healthcare coverage for all Americans, as reported by a Gallup Poll, according to The Hill’s Healthwatch report.

According to the report, this is the first time public support for a government guarantee has dropped below the majority. Fifty-four percent of individuals reported that they do not believe healthcare access is the government’s responsibility.

In 2007, 64 percent said the government has responsibility to ensure healthcare access. That percentage fell to 50 percent in 2009 and 2010, according to the report.

The drop comes mostly from Republicans, according to Gallup. In 2007, 38 percent of Republicans supported a government guarantee but the percentage is just 12 percent now.
