An estimated 58.7 million people were uninsured for at least part of the year, and 34.2 million have been uninsured for more than a year, according to the CDC.
The number of uninsured adults under the age of 26 in 2011 — 28 percent — was down 6 percent from 2010. Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, young adults can stay on parent health insurance plans until they turn 26.
