The guidelines were designed to provide healthcare providers guidance in the diagnosis and management of community-acquired pneumonia in outpatient or inpatient settings. The guidelines also address ways to decrease morbidity and mortality rates for community-acquired pneumonia in children older than three months of age. The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society and the Infectious Diseases Society of America utilized a rating system to indicate the strength of each recommendation based on medical literature.
