Florida Hospitals Reduce Surgical Complications, Save $6.6M Through NSQIP

 

Through participating in the American College of Surgeons' National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, the Florida Surgical Care Initiative reduced complications 14.5 percent and saved an estimated 89 lives and $6.6 million in the 15-month period between Mach 2011 and July 2012.

 

The FSCI group included 54 hospitals. Most improved on NSQIP measures, with some hospitals experiencing significant improvement, indicating initiative-wide success, according to a news release.

"The results of the Florida initiative show that the ACS NSQIP process, applied across a population by committed institutions, can produce dramatic results," said Joseph J. Tepas III, MAD, the lead author of the study examining the extent to which NSQIP improvement was widespread or due to outlier performance, in the release.
