The fire occurred around 2 a.m. in one room on the hospital’s sixth floor, which houses a separately operated, 30-bed facility called Select Specialty Hospital, which specializes in long-term acute care.

Three hospital staff members suffered smoke inhalation, and three patients who were on ventilators before the fire were checked into the emergency room and then transferred to the intensive care unit. Other patients were moved to other areas of the hospital, according to the report.

Authorities had received a report of an explosion, which turned out to be a fire, according to the report. The hospital’s sprinkler system kept the fire under control until firefighters arrived. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
