Wallcur’s simulated IV saline solution — which is not sterile and is meant for training purposes only — was accidentally shipped to clinics, surgical centers and urgent care facilities in numerous states.
Thus far, the FDA knows of more than 40 cases in which patients received infusions of the simulated saline products, many of whom experienced fever, chills, tremors and headaches.
Several patients have been hospitalized and one death is thought to be associated with the simulated saline injections, although it is not known if this death is directly related to the product.
The FDA issued several recommendations to clinicians and healthcare providers, such as visually inspecting all IV saline solution bags for labels indicating they are not for clinical use, removing such products from existing inventory and evaluating potentially exposed patients for symptoms.
